What are the tools available to determine the largest files and directories on the system?

There are a couple of simple commands that will help accomplish this task. They are du and sort.
The du command is used to calculate the sizes of files or whole directories. Run du as the root user or superuser. Running it as a regular user will result in "Permission Denied" errors.
