How can I change the text character size in text mode (runlevel 3)?

The solution to using smaller fonts is to use the kernel framebuffer to set the console to a higher resolution.

To use the framebuffer, modify the kernel line in the /boot/grub/grub.conf file by appending vga=xxx where xxx is an integer or hex value.
