Why does the Intel Gigabit Ethernet Driver run under MSI instead of MSI-X in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4?

Issue

On Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4, 'igb' driver uses MSI (Message Signaled Interrupts) while it's capable of using MSI-X (Message Signaled Interrupts, Extended).

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4
  • igb.ko module.

Diagnostic Steps

  • dmesg shows the below logs which indicates the igb module is running with MSI mode:
