How can I fix a terminal session if it begins to display corrupt characters?

Under certain circumstances - if a non-text file is opened, for example - the characters in a terminal may become corrupt and unreadable. This renders the terminal unusable. For example:

[root@rhel ~]# cat /bin/ls
...
⎽├⎼␌└⎻├␌±␊├⎻±⎼⎻ __┌␋␉␌_⎽├▒⎼├_└
