Is there any way to change the format (qcow, raw) of the ephemeral disk?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Environment

  • Red Hat OpenStack Platform 8.0
  • Red Hat OpenStack Platform 9.0
  • Red Hat OpenStack Platform 10.0

Issue

  • Change the disk format of the ephemeral disk in some instances from Qcow2 to RAW
  • Due to some performance dependent applications, there is a need to change the ephemeral disk to RAW.

Resolution

  • Qcow2 is the default format and it's not possible to change the disk format of the ephemeral disk of instances from Qcow2 to RAW.

Root Cause

  • When RHOSP is deployed without any external storage and deployed with compute service, The OpenStack users are not having any kind of access to persistent storage.
  • Instances use the ephemeral disk, whenever instances are terminated the disk get disappeared from user's point of view.
