Unable to create LVM mirrors with the error: "Insufficient suitable allocatable extents". How to fix it?

Issue

  • When creating mirrored logical volumes, the error message came out: "Insufficient free space" in spite of there being plenty of free space.
  • What is the reason? How to fix it?
Insufficient free space: XXX extents needed, but only 0 available
Unable to allocate extents for mirror(s).

Or

Insufficient suitable allocatable extents for logical volume : XX more required
Unable to allocate extents for mirror(s).

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4,5,6
  • Logical Volume Manager 2 (LVM2)
