Black screen after gdm login in RHEL 8

Hi,

sporadically I am unable to login to the graphical gnome Xorg session via gdm after a reboot was done.
Wayland sessions are not affected.

The screen stays black and I only see the mouse cursor.

Some hints that I found that might cause the problem:

ls -l /var/run/user/1000/gdm/
total 4
-rw------- 1 root root 100 Mar  1 09:10 Xauthority

Shouldn't Xauthoriry be owned by the user that uses the Xsession?
In Xorg.0.log I see

[ 98565.440] (EE) Failed to open authorization file "/run/user/1000/gdm/Xauthority": Permission denied
