How to shutdown an OSD/ROSA cluster manually

Solution Verified - Updated -

Environment

  • Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS (ROSA)
    • 4
  • Red Hat OpenShift Dedicated (OSD)
    • 4

Issue

  • Is it possible to shutdown an OSD/ROSA cluster to save running costs?
  • To save running cost, it's needed to shutdown a ROSA cluster through direct AWS operations.
  • The following alert is received after shutdown a ROSA cluster:

Your cluster requires you to take action because it is no longer registering with Red Hat OpenShift Cluster Manager. Possible causes include stopping instances or a networking misconfiguration. If you intended to terminate this cluster then please delete the cluster. Otherwise file a support request.

Resolution

Red Hat is aware of this issue, and an internal task was created to add this functionality (SDE-685).

If the cluster is not needed for a while, it's possible to remove it after backing up the persistent data and confirming that the CI/CD solutions are in place. A new cluster can be created again when needed.

If an OSD or ROSA cluster is manually shutdown, the following alerts will be triggered:

Your cluster requires you to take action because it is no longer registering with Red Hat OpenShift Cluster Manager. Possible causes include stopping instances or a networking misconfiguration. If you intended to terminate this cluster then please delete the cluster. Otherwise file a support request.

Root Cause

It's not yet supported to shutdown an OSD or ROSA cluster as shown in the documentation:

Shutting down the underlying infrastructure through the cloud provider console is unsupported and can lead to data loss.

Because ROSA and OSD are managed services, that means the cluster, including control plane and infrastructure, are managed by the SRE Teams, and it should be available as always under SRE control.
Long term cluster shutdown causes out-of-date SRE management tools/clusters/components. OpenShift clusters are not intended to be shutdown for extended periods.

ROSA and OSD CCS are based on the customer's AWS account, so the customer can control over all AWS resources without restrictions. But it does not mean it's possible to handle them freely on ROSA. It's not expected to have direct AWS operations except mentioned in the ROSA documentation.

Diagnostic Steps

The following alert is received after shutdown a ROSA cluser:

Your cluster requires you to take action because it is no longer registering with Red Hat OpenShift Cluster Manager. Possible causes include stopping instances or a networking misconfiguration. If you intended to terminate this cluster then please delete the cluster. Otherwise file a support request.
