Why do I get "error 12: invalid device requested" when booting after a kickstart on a machine with attached LUNs?

Sometimes after kickstarting a machine with attached LUNs you can see the following error:

grub> root (hd33,0)
error 12: invalid device requested
install --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2
(hd33,0)/grub/grub.conf
