Watchdog driver conflict with 6300ESB device

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

When installing a fresh RHEL 6.2, two different drivers are automatically loaded on boot time to address the same h/w watchdog device (from the Intel ESB6300 chipset, i.e. south-bridge). The following modules are automatically loaded:

  • i6300esb
  • iTCO_wdt

As a consequence, when the second module is loaded (iTCO_wdt), there is the following error from the kernel:

i6300ESB timer: Intel 6300ESB WatchDog Timer Driver v0.04
i6300ESB timer: initialized (0xffffc9000112e800). heartbeat=30 sec (nowayout=0)
iTCO_wdt: Intel TCO WatchDog Timer Driver v1.05
iTCO_wdt: Found a 6300ESB TCO device (Version=1, TCOBASE=0x0460)
iTCO_wdt: cannot register miscdev on minor=130 (err=-16)
iTCO_wdt: probe of iTCO_wdt failed with error -16
