Can I use a GRE tunnel for the communication network interface in a RHEL 5, 6, or 7 High Availability cluster?

Issue

The heartbeat network is unstable so we need to move it into the main ethernet device. Unfortunatley the network will not allow multicast. Is it possible to run the traffic into GRE tunnels ?
Does Red Hat support using a tunnel for cluster node communications?

Environment

Red Hat Entreprise Linux (RHEL) 5, 6, or 7 with the High Availability
A GRE tunnel created directly on the hosts, using ip tunnel or similar methods
