Flash disk connected to SST19 ide to flash converter do not work RHEL6.2

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

One of our blade use an embedded flash memory device that is mounted as a storage device. From the hardware perspective, we use a specific controller (SST supplier) to connect the flash device to the IDE interface of the CPU chipset. This way, the flash device is considered as a standard IDE/PATA storage device by Linux (/dev/sdx in RHEL6).
Depending on the h/w revision of the blade, there are two different version of the SST controller which connect the IDE interface to the flash device (SST19 or SST20).

With RHEL5, whatever the SST controller revision is (19 or 20), the flash device is properly detected. Then it is possible to format it and to mount it.

With RHEL6, it's impossible to correctly format and mount the flash device with the older revision of the SST controller (i.e. 19). But with the latest SST controller revision (i.e. 20), everything works properly.

  • flash works correctly with RHEL6 (SST20)
  • flash doesn't work with RHEL6 (SST19)

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
  • SST19 Flash to IDE controller
