Load average climbs to an abnormally high level when a user's kerberos credentials expire

Solution In Progress - Updated -

Issue

  • Customer has a monitoring tool that logs in and does (among other things) an lsof using the 'appuser' login id.
  • If the 'appuser' login has an expired kerberos ticket then the lsof will hang when it tries to access a kerberized nfs mount.
  • The hang will last until the expired ticket is destroyed or a ticket is obtained.
  • These lsof processes will stack up and result in the high load average.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
  • Kerberized NFSv4 mounts
