RHEL5: NIC ordering changed when rebooting or upgrading the kernel.

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • A VMware guest with mixed vmxnet3 and e1000 cards had the kernel upgraded to a newer 5.8 version
  • After updating the vmware-tools package, the NIC ordering has changed.

  • This issue is also seen in RHEL5 systems, which might change the NIC ordering after a reboot, due to a PCI bus enumerating delay on some NICs.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
