After Upgrading to RHEL6.2, machine crashes with RIP alc_build_controls +0x24a/0x520 in snd_hda_codec_build_controls

Issue

  • When the laptops are upgraded to Red Hat 6.2 Workstation, following message is observed on reboot and the machine hangs:
kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception

  • If reboot the machine, select the previous kernel (2.6.32-131.21.1.el6.x86_64), then everything is okay again.
  • Machine with Realtek audio drivers crashes while boot to 2.6.32-220 kernel
  • modprobe crashes the kernel during driver probe and pci attach of snd_hda_intel

Environment

  • RHEL 6.2
    • kernel-2.6.32-220.el6.x86_64
    • Issue does not occur on 6.1 kernel (2.6.31-131*)
  • Realtek High Definition Audio (HD Audio) codec support on Intel HD Audio
  • Hardware affected (partial list)
    • ASUS M70v
    • ASUS G72GX
    • Asus Eee PC 1008HA
    • Codec: Realtek ALC269
