Why do we need this parameter "rdloaddriver=scsi_dh_alua" in grub on RHEL 6.4 for NetApp LUN Devices

Server works fine when it is loaded with this kernel parameter on grub - "rdloaddriver=scsi_dh_alua" on RHEL 6.4, but why this is needed when "RHEL 5" servers doesn't need this parameter.

Multipath issue after rebooting the hosts. Local vgoracle filesystems are getting corrupted and some of the ASM disks are missing.
