System Panics when Root Processes are Killed

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • System panics when users attempt to kill root-owned processes
  • auditd is set to force a system panic on audit failure
  • However, when certain processes are killed, this panic appears to occur erroneously:

    root> kill <process> (No errors)
    user> sudo kill <root_owned_process> (panic)

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.1, 6.2, and 6.3
