What is the Red Hat's consultation for the vmware recommendation on decreasing the timer interrupts ?

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Issue

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 VMs are configured to receive 1000 timer interrupts per second. This configuration is not optimal and significantly increases CPU ready time for VMs with many vCPUs (you have VMs with up to 8 vCPUs) because the ESXi kernel needs to schedule all 8 vCPUs approximately at the same time at least 1000 times per second even if they are idle.

  • Passing divider=10 as a kernel parameter would be good option or not.

  • Does the article of Vmware is recommended option by Red Hat ?

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
  • VMWare
