Kernel panic when system boots with message "kobject_add failed for ipmi_bmc.17 with -EEXIST"

Issue

  • After a power recycle of one of our blade servers, we receive kernel panic - not syncing fatal exception, shortly after a couple of services have been started.
  • The following error message is seen:
kernel: kobject\_add failed for ipmi\_bmc.17 with -EEXIST, don't try to register things with the same name in the same directory

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
  • HPE Blade server
