xinetd fills /var/log/messages in Red Hat Enterprise Linux

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Using the echo-dgram service in xinetd with the default settings for "cps"  (50 10). When reaching the limit of 50 messages, xinetd writes lots of entries (~1.4 million) to the /var/log/messages file. The entries look like this:

    Jan 30 13:43:33 dl380x1969 xinetd[25668]: 1 descriptors still set
    Jan 30 13:43:33 dl380x1969 xinetd[25668]: 1 descriptors still set

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6.2
  • xinetd-2.3.14-33.el6
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.9
