Cannot ping or ssh into KVM guests after RHEL 6.5 update on KVM hypervisor and guest

Network access is restored after restarting the guest network interfaces with:
ifdown eth0
ifup etho0
service network restart
Environment
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5 (guest and host)
- KVM virtualization
