Receiving the error "Circular directory structure." when running 'du' on a mounted NFS-share from a NetApp Filer

Issue

Mounting over NFS (Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6) from a Netapp filer. When doing a du on the NFS directory the du command as it enters the .snapshot directory from Netapp, it trips over with the below message:

du: WARNING: Circular directory structure.
This almost certainly means that you have a corrupted file system.
NOTIFY YOUR SYSTEM MANAGER.

Environment

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.2+
NetApp NFS-Server with snapshotting enabled (creates .snapshot directories)
