Sharing /etc/cups in RHEL

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • We have several application servers that print to CUPS print servers. We are looking at sharing (using NFS or gluster) the /etc/cups directory among the application servers. This way we only have to add the printer to one applications server and it shows up on all of the app servers. We also have a different shared /etc/cups directory that is shared between the CUPS print servers. This way we just add printers to one of them. Is there any problem with sharing the /etc/cups dir?
  • We have some systems where the cups configuration files /etc/cups reside on a NFS share and when the servers are booted cups does not start since NFS has not been started yet.
  • Several printers disappeared from the printers.conf file on our production servers. The last 33 printers in the file had gone, but we have not been able to find any evidence from the logs of why they were removed. The printers.conf file is stored on shared storage that is accessible to both servers though an NFS mount point,

Environment

  • Common Unix Printing System (CUPS) 1.1.22, 1.3.7, 1.4.2, and 1.6.3
