pvmove produces error 'Physical Volume /dev/sdX1 not found in Volume Group VolGroup0X'

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • The LVM volume is created with two PVs, one of which is full and the other a temporary addition. There is a requirement to move the data from these two PVs to a new empty PV. But running pvmove on the Physical Volume produces an error message:

    [root@host ~]# pvmove -v /dev/sdm1
     Finding volume group "VolGroup02"
Physical Volume "/dev/sdm1" not found in Volume Group "VolGroup02"

Even though the PV /dev/sdm1 is listed in VolGroup02 in pvs and pvdisplay.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4, 5, 6, 7
  • LVM volumes created over SAN devices.
