Repeated kernel panic related to vmxnet3 driver

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Issue

  • We have enabled kdump to capture the error after several kernel panics. Have upgraded vmware-tools to 9.0.0-2 and kernel to 2.6.32-431.el6.x86_64 but still experiencing the kernel panic.

  • kernel BUG at drivers/net/vmxnet3/vmxnet3_drv.c:1187!

  • The system panics randomly in the vmxnet3 driver at different code points.

  • Kernel panics in vmxnet3 with vmxnet3_rq_rx_complete , vmxnet3_poll_rx_only and vmxnet3_tq_tx_complete

  • VMWare VMs panic with backtrace similar to:

    [exception RIP: vmxnet3_rq_rx_complete+1885]

 #7 [ffff88002cc63dd8] dev_kfree_skb_any at ffffffff8142a4dd
 #8 [ffff88002cc63e38] vmxnet3_poll_rx_only at ffffffffa0121003 [vmxnet3]
 #9 [ffff88002cc63e78] net_rx_action at ffffffff8142dba3

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.3 (kernel-2.6.32-279.22.1.el6.x86_64)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5 (kernel-2.6.32-431.el6.x86_64)
