read-only filesystem after Dell H700 storage controller timeout and failover

Issue

  • An ext3 filesystem mounted on a virtual disk LUN went read-only after a storage controller timeout and failover :

A short time later the journal was aborted and the filesystem went read-only :

EXT3-fs error (device sdh1): ext3_free_blocks_sb: bit already cleared for block 61295642
...

  • RHEL 5.7, with kernel 2.6.18-274.el5
  • DELL H700 storage controller
  • DELL virtual disk, Model: MD Virtual Disk Rev: 0735
  • ext3 filesystem
