Why do I see error message "ifdown-eth: line 64: echo: write error: Invalid argument" on shutdown of bonding device?

Issue

Found following error message while doing a bonding device shutdown with ifdown command.

 ifdown-eth: line 64: echo: write error: Invalid argument

ifconfig-bond0 has BONDING_OPTS="mode=1 arp_ip_target=xxx.yyy.zzz.www arp_interval=1000"
Issue doesn't appear on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.6.
