Why do I see error message "ifdown-eth: line 64: echo: write error: Invalid argument" on shutdown of bonding device?

Issue

  • Found following error message while doing a bonding device shutdown with ifdown command.
 ifdown-eth: line 64: echo: write error: Invalid argument
  • ifconfig-bond0 has BONDING_OPTS="mode=1 arp_ip_target=xxx.yyy.zzz.www arp_interval=1000"
  • Issue doesn't appear on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.6.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5.7 with initscripts-8.45.38-2.el5
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6
