New kernel is installed, but not available during reboot

Issue

I have installed a new kernel, but at boot time, the server immediately boots into the previous version
/boot/grub/grub.conf appears correct
/var/log/messages confirms that the kernel is installed
/boot is not mounted
/boot is not present in /etc/fstab
