Why does the system throw the "Permission denied" error when trying to create a file in the parent directory of mount-point of automount?

Issue

  • The autofs configuration works fine but when tried to create a file or directory in the parent directory of the mount-point, it fails with the "Permission denied" error
# cat /etc/auto.master
  /mnt /etc/auto.mnt

# cat /etc/auto.mnt
  home  -fstype=nfs hostname.example.com:/mnt/home

[user@hostname ~]# cd /mnt/home
[user@hostname ~]# ls 
file1 file2
[user@hostname ~]# cd ../
[user@hostname ~]# pwd
/mnt
[user@hostname ~]# mkdir /mnt/testfile
mkdir: cannot create directory `testfile': Permission denied
