clvmd fails to activate mirrored volumes with "device-mapper: reload ioctl failed: Invalid argument" and the logs show "dm-log-clustered: Userspace cluster log server not found" in RHEL 5

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Issue

  • Having trouble activating the cluster and the cluster volumes.
# service clvmd start
Starting clvmd:
Activating VG(s): Error locking on node node1: device-mapper: reload ioctl failed: Invalid argument
Error locking on node node1: device-mapper: reload ioctl failed: Invalid argument
1 logical volume(s) in volume group "myVG" now active
                                                           [FAILED]
  • I am unable to mount my clustered mirrored logical volumes on reboot, and I see errors like these in the logs:
kernel: device-mapper: dm-log-clustered: Unable to send cluster log request [DM_CLOG_CTR] to server: -3
kernel: device-mapper: dm-log-clustered: Userspace cluster log server not found
kernel: device-mapper: table: 253:16: mirror: Error creating mirror dirty log
kernel: device-mapper: ioctl: error adding target to table
