System recovered by ReaR fails to boot with "failed to create timezone change event source permission denied" and/or service startup errors

Issue

  • After a successful backup/restore with rear, the first boot of the recovered system fails with the message:

    Failed to create timezone change event source: Permission denied
    
  • When booting the system without rhgb quiet, the console reports some services failed to start, e.g.:

    [FAILED] Failed to start Load Kernel Modules.
    [FAILED] Failed to start Apply Kernel Variables.
    [FAILED] Failed to start Root and Kernel File Systems.
    [FAILED] Failed to start Journal Service.
    ...
