Is it possible to get the size of a volumegroup as non-root user?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • For monitoring purposes we need to get the size and free size of a volumegroup. But for obvious reasons we do not want to do this as the root user. Is it possible to obtain this information as a non-root user and how would we do this.

Running vgs as a non root user now gives:

WARNING: Running as a non-root user. Functionality may be unavailable.
  /dev/mapper/control: open failed: Permission denied
Failure to communicate with kernel device-mapper driver.
  No volume groups found

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6.5
  • LVM2
