YUM update command resulting an error "Bad id for repo: rhel DVD, byte = 4"

Issue

  • yum update fails with following error:

  • On Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6

# yum update --noplugins
Bad id for repo: RHEL 6.2 Repository, byte =   4
  • On Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
Bad id for repo: rhel5 DVD, byte =   4

The following is the repo file which is used for local dvd image

[rhel 5-dvd]  
name=rhel-5-dvd  
baseurl=file:///cdrom  
gpgcheck=0  
enabled=1

# more /etc/yum.repos.d/file.repo
[RHEL 6.2 Repository]
baseurl=file:///cdrom
enabled=1

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
