kdump service fails with the message "Rootfs device /dev/cciss/XXXX is not resettable"

Issue

  • kdump service fails on HP ProLiant DL585 G2 system.
  • Restarting kdump service throw following warning messages on terminal:
# service kdump restart
Stopping kdump:                                            [  OK  ]
No kdump initial ramdisk found.                            [WARNING]
Rebuilding /boot/initrd-2.6.32-131.0.15.el6.x86_64kdump.img
Can not save vmcore to target device /dev/cciss/c0d1. This device can not be initialized in kdump kernel as it is not resettable
Failed to run mkdumprd

or

# service kdump restart
Stopping kdump:                                            [  OK  ]
No kdump initial ramdisk found.                            [WARNING]
Rebuilding /boot/initrd-2.6.32-131.6.1.el6.x86_64kdump.img
cat: /sys/block/cciss!c0d0/device/type: No such file or directory
Rootfs device /dev/cciss/c0d0p3 is not resettable, can not be used as the default target, please specify a default action
Failed to run mkdumprd

  • Observed also on HP Smart Array 6i Controller (Firmware Version: 2.84)
