What are the "PAM unable to dlopen(...)" entries in secure logs?

Issue

  • In the /var/log/secure logs there are entries like:
Jan  1 00:00:00 hostname service[pid]: PAM unable to dlopen(/path/to/pam_module.so)
Jan  1 00:00:00 hostname service[pid]: PAM [error: /path/to/pam_module.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory]
  • How can that be fixed?
