Why does NFS fail to start?

Issue

When trying to start NFS, the following error is displayed:

   # /etc/init.d/nfs start
    Starting NFS services:[ OK ]
    Starting NFS daemon: rpc.nfsd: unable to resolve ANYADDR:nfs to inet address: Servname not supported for ai_socktype  
    rpc.nfsd: unable to resolve ANYADDR:nfs to inet6 address: Servname not supported for ai_socktype  
    rpc.nfsd: unable to set any sockets for nfsd  
    [FAILED]  

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6
