Unable to continue with Ctrl+D or login after a failed file system check

Issue

  • After a failed file system check, it is not possble to login as root and the suggested Control+D for continue does not work either. The system stays at the following prompt:
    *** An error occurred during the file system check.
    *** Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot
    *** when you leave the shell.
    Give root password for maintenance
    (or type Control-D to continue):
    Login incorrect.
    Give root password for maintenance
    (or type Control-D to continue):
    Login incorrect.

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.0
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.1
