Why does my server not provide a graphical user interface in runlevel 5?

Issue

  • The default Server install for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 can not be started in runlevel 5.
  • The graphical user interface does not get started as expected.
  • /var/log/messages contains following entries while trying to boot system in runlevel 5:
    init: prefdm main process ended, respawning
    dprio init: prefdm main process (xxxx) terminated with status 1
    dprio init: prefdm respawning too fast, stopped
