Extremely poor performance observed on GFS2 unrelated to locking overhead

Issue

  • Extremely slow read and write performance observed to and from GFS2.
  • Issue is present even when the filesystem is only mounted on 1 node at a time.

  • Issue is present even when mounted with lock_nolock.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5.3 through RHEL 5.6.

  • Red Hat Global Filesystem 2 (GFS2.)

  • Data on the affected filesystem was created or added while using a kernel earlier than one of the following:

    • In RHEL 5.4 with Extended Update Support: kernel-164.36.1.

    • In RHEL 5.6 with Extended Update Support: kernel-2.6.18-238.12.1.

    • In RHEL 5.3 or later:  kernel-2.6.18-274.

  • This issue does not affect GFS2 on RHEL 6 or above
