The kdump (crash) kernel panics with '/etc/clock: cannot open'

Issue

  • When initiating a kernel crash dump (vmcore), the kdump kernel goes into panic. The last part of the console messages are given below:

    Creating block device ram9
    Making device-mapper control node
    Scanning logical volumes
      Reading all physical volumes.  This may take a while...
      Found volume group "volgrp01" using metadata type lvm2
    Activating logical volumes
      5 logical volume(s) in volume group "volgrp01" now active
    Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
    /etc/clock: cannot open
    <0>Rebooting in 20 seconds..
