Why after migrating or cloning a Virtual Machine, the network interface was renamed from ethX to ethY on RHEL Server ?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • After migrating or cloning a Virtual Machine, the network was renamed from ethX to ethY
  • The network does not work even if the ifcfg-eth0 file is set up accordingly.
  • Also in some cases where image clone was used to create a new Virtual Machine, changing eth0 to eth1
  • The following resolution is also useful if you are renaming the Network device from eth1 to eth2 for example.
