Issue

  • System with boot and root filesystem on SAN failed to boot with the initrd image created on a new kernel installation.
  • After installing kernel version '2.6.18-238.5.1.el5', reboot to the new kernel resulted in kernel panic. The kernel panic messages indicated that root filesystem was not accessible.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux system configured to boot from SAN, using device mapper multipath module
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
