How is a disk with more then 2TiB disk size using a DOS partition table?

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Issue

  • As per this document fdisk or parted won't create partitions larger than 2 TB, the DOS partion table should not be able to create partions greater then 2TB, but this does not seem to be correct :

$ sudo parted /dev/sdb print version
Model: WD My Book 1130 (scsi)
    Disk /dev/sdb: 3001GB
    Sector size (logical/physical): 4096B/4096B
    Partition Table: msdos

Number Start End Size Type File system Flags
    1 1049kB 3001GB 3001GB primary
