Creating a virtual machine fails with "linux kernel too old to load a ram disk" error

Using both GUI and command line to try and create a guest fails with the following error:
ERROR internal error Process exited while reading console log output: char device redirected to /dev/pts/1 qemu: linux kernel too old to load a ram disk
