Higher than expected ip forwarding latency

Solution In Progress - Updated -

Issue

  • We are observing high latencies on the client device, and high CPU usage on the VM (software interrupts).
  • When running tcpdump/tshark, the CPU spikes to 100% (software interrupts).
  • When bypassing the VM the latencies are back to normal.
  • Average latency (5000 concurrent connections) on RHEL 8.3 is 2.5 - 4.5ms, when customer bypass this its around 0.5ms with the same number of connections.
