When I try to start multipathd we get an error: "Starting multipathd daemon: DM multipath kernel driver not loaded" in RHEL

Issue

  • We have installed the device-mapper-multipath-0.4.5-35.el4_8.3.x86_64 RPM. And replaced the vanilla the /etc/multipath.conf with our custom one. When we try to start multipathd we get an error: "Starting multipathd daemon: DM multipath kernel driver not loaded"
  • What is the reason I have received "DM multipath kernel driver not loaded" message when I execute "multipath -v2" command ?
    • But we are able to start "multipath" daemon without fail
#service multipathd start
Starting multipathd daemon:                                [  OK  ]

#multipath -v2 
DM multipath kernel driver not loaded

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux all versions
  • device-mapper-multipath
