Documents printed to a z-series mainframe via LPD are not formatted correctly

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Issue

  • When sending a file from Red Hat Enterprise Linux using CUPS to a mainframe we are seeing a CARRIAGE RETURN being stripped out, we are sending the same file from another server with LPRng and the file has the correct carriage returns. At the mainframe side the right output gets identified with a 1 in the body of the output, showing each 1 represents a change of page.
  • The output from the printer is that the pages look like they're being overlaid. Two pages print on top of each other, and then the next page prints OK.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7 and 8
  • Common Unix Printing System (CUPS) 1.6.3 and 2.2.6
  • LPD (Line Printer Daemon) print server running on a z-series mainframe
