How do I upgrade my RHS2.0 (Glusterfs) servers to RHS2.1?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Environment

Red Hat Storage Server 2.1

Issue

  • What is the best process to upgrade my Red Hat Storage 2.0 systems?

Resolution

Please follow the upgrade section of Red Hat Storage administration guide.

  1. Do all clients need to be disconnected? - Yes

  2. How long does the upgrade process take? - A few minutes for each server.

  3. Does the update just consist of installing new package or, are the bricks content analyzed? - The brick contents are not modified, but new binary (package) files are installed.

  4. In case of a disconnected upgrade, in order to minimize the downtime, it is possible to update 1 node after the other and reconnect clients OR do both nodes need to be upgraded at the same time. - All clients need to disconnect, and all servers (nodes) need to be stopped. Then the servers should be upgraded, and the clients upgraded. Finally, restart the volume, and reconnect the clients.

  5. Do clients need to be upgraded too? Yes.

There have been a few issues noted during upgrade, some have already been fixed. See https://access.redhat.com/site/solutions/489373

Root Cause

Clients and servers with active connections will not have the running binaries updated until the service is restarted. Older code will not function correctly with the newer code.
