GFS2 shows different total filesystem usage between du and df output on RHEL 5

Issue

  • We are seeing a big difference between the disk space usage reported by du and df on a GFS2 filesystem.
  • The du and df total usage size of a GFS2 file-system eventually drift apart after running the fsck.gfs2 command.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server 5 (with High Availability and Resilient Storage Add-ons)
  • Global File System 2 (GFS2)
