gedit / kedit does not remember words added to the dictionary

Why is
en_US.dicbeing overwritten when adding new words usinggedit?
Environment
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
- enchant-1.5.0-4.el6
- gedit-2.28.4-3.el6, kedit, kwrite, and other applications using enchant.
